چکیده

sified due to national concern about wildlife associated with them. Sage-grouse and other native fauna closely associated with sagebrush plant communities are thought to be declining in many areas. Several range-wide petitions have been filed for listing the sage-grouse under the Endangered Species Act. The black-tailed prairie dog, often associated with sagebrush-grass types, and the sagebrush dependent pygmy rabbit are also said to be in decline. Although the landscapes of the western United States are commonly typified by diverse sagebrush dominated floras, there is a long standing attitude in the West that takes sagebrush plant communities for granted or considers them little more than a hindrance to agricultural uses. This is especially true of big sagebrush, the most common and widely distributed sage species in the western United States. Slowly this attitude is changing to one of concern for the conservation of sagebrush plant communities. Over the years, those interested in the management of sagebrush habitats have asked us for tools they can use in the field to better identify the diverse sagebrush taxa (4,5). This paper provides an aid in the form of photographs and descriptions for identifying four generally accepted subspecies of big sagebrush. We chose to discuss big sagebrush as it is the species most often at the center of controversy due to frequent proposals to kill it by burning, spraying, or plowing. Our purpose is to aid the field investigator with identification. We also contrast the ecological characteristics of the big sagebrush subspecies. Our approach closely follows Wambolt (3), Wambolt and Frisina (4), and Wambolt and Frisina (5). RANGELANDS 26 (1) 12

Native perennial forb variation between mountain big sagebrush and Wyoming big sagebrush plant communities.

Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) occupies large portions of the western United States and provides valuable wildlife habitat. However, information is lacking quantifying differences in native perennial forb characteristics between mountain big sagebrush [A. tridentata spp. vaseyana (Rydb.) Beetle] and Wyoming big sagebrush [A. tridentata spp. wyomingensis (Beetle & A. Young) S.L. Wels...

Consequences of Treating Wyoming Big Sagebrush to Enhance Wildlife Habitats

Sagebrush (Artemisia L.) taxa historically functioned as the keystone species on 1 090 000 km of rangeland across the western United States, and Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis Beetle and Young) is or was dominant on a substantial amount of this landscape. Wyoming big sagebrush provides habitat for numerous wildlife species. Nevertheless, Wyoming big sagebrus...

Seeding Considerations in Restoring Big Sagebrush Habitat

This papcrdescribes methods of managing or seeding to restore big sagebrush communities for wildlife habitat. The focus is on three bigsagebrush subspecies, Wyomingbigsagebrush (Artemi sia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis), basin big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata), and mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana). Natural colonization of the native plant community ...

Genetic and phenotypic parameters for dietary selection of mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. vaseyana.

The heritability of diet selection for mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. vaseyana [Rydb] Beetle) by grazing sheep was estimated from fecal samples collected from 549 Rambouillet ewes. Fecal samples were collected in September and October during 1996 and 1997 from free-grazing ewes on intermountain sagebrush-bunchgrass rangelands at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Idah...

Are there benefits to mowing Wyoming big sagebrush plant communities? An evaluation in southeastern Oregon.

Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis Beetle & Young) communities frequently are mowed in an attempt to increase perennial herbaceous vegetation. However, there is limited information as to whether expected benefits of mowing are realized when applied to Wyoming big sagebrush communities with intact understory vegetation. We compared vegetation and soil nutrient concentr...
